![]() ![]() The names of people who performed sounds like a veritable Who's Who. Writers jack Kerouac, Alan Ginsberg and others traveling coast to cost would make Gaslight a deliberate stop to witness hipster nirvana. Social historians say this nexus of bohemian nightlife helped construct an important alternative American Scene. Like New York's Greenwich, Gaslight Square became one of the main hubs of the Beat Generation. Gaslight was truly a unique hot spot for entertainment. Landesman even co-wrote a beatnik play that was performed at the Palace, "The Nervous Set." It was so popular it soon headed for Henry Miller's Theater on Broadway. They originally called the place Greenwich Corners. The area also boasted live jazz, Irish dancing, street mimes and a street car known as the "dinky." Old-timers swear that its sometimes took a half an hour to go two blocks by car.The place was jumpstarted when Jay Landesman and his wife Fran (of Westminster Place) moved their Crystal Palace from Olive Street, close to Grand, to Olive Street near Boyle. Original music was everyw and the streets were lined with packed clubs, bars, theaters, restaurants and coffee houses with discussions that carried into the wee hours of the morning. An influx of insurance money allowed the place to be transformed into a mecca for beatniks, artists, musicians, singers, poets, comedians and other performers. In the tornado's wake rose and effervescent free-spirited atmosp that hasn't been matched anyw since. Many fixtures, appliances and decorative ornamentations from Mill Creek found new homes in the Square. ![]() The Mill Creek Valley neighborhoods at the time were meeting the wrecking ball, and undergoing wholesale urban renewal. That district was hit hard by a devastating tornado on February 15, 1959. In the 1950s it became a a haven of about 20 antique shops, referred to as Secondhand Row. In the 1930s it had been a red-light district. That two-block section of Olve Street, between Boyle and Sarah Street in the Central West End, was, to many people, like a magical state of mind. ![]() One of the most popular and famous places in America, in the 1960s, was Gaslight Square, a thriving entertainment district that became far more notorious than Bourbon Street in New Orleans. We are a family that has formed over the past 50+ years with regular customers coming in who have done so for decades. Our servers and bartenders are professionals who work hard for the money. Our homemade soups are made daily each morning by our kitchen staff that takes great pride in serving great food. Guinness is on tap and the burgers are served hot. We are family friendly but are also a traditional Irish pub where conversation flows freely. When Jack opened the new location he famously said, " anyone who behaves in a civilized manner is welcome in my establishment", and this inclusive spirit continues to this day. The “new” building was built in 1905 by Anheuser-Busch and had gone thru a few manifestations before Jack bought it. When he moved to the current location in 1972, he brought everything from the original wooden bar to the 1904 World's Fair chandeliers to the chairs, booths and kitchen equipment. When the original investment group had had enough they sold it to Jack. Jack was a regular and helped with the founding and eventually started to work there as a bartender. O'C's was founded in 1962 in Gaslight Square and bought by Jack Parker in 1965. Louis tradition for over 50 years and is home to our world famous ground sirloin burger & roast beef sandwich. ![]()
